# Google Chat

> Answer @mentions and direct messages in Google Chat

Google Chat lets the assistant answer inside Google Workspace. Someone messages the app directly, or @mentions it in a space, and the answer stays in that Chat thread. The same thread is in History.

## When to use it

Use it when the team already works in Google Chat: a direct question to the assistant, or an @mention in a space where the work is happening. Connecting an assistant means that reply uses the assistant's instructions and tools.

## What the assistant hears

Google Chat posts direct messages and @mentions to the HTTP address you save on the Chat app. Famulor does not set up Pub/Sub. Messages that Google would deliver only through Pub/Sub are not part of this connection.

## Where the keys come from

The linked provider guide shows the screens for these clicks. Follow the clicks below together with those pictures.

In [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com), create a service account and download a JSON key. The file must include the service account email and the private key. The **GCP project number** is the number on the project dashboard, not the project ID. If the organization blocks new keys, a workspace admin has to allow a key for this project. Official guides: [Configure the Chat app](https://developers.google.com/workspace/chat/configure-chat-api) and [verify requests](https://developers.google.com/workspace/chat/verify-requests-from-chat).

## Create it at the provider

1. In Google Cloud Console, create or select a project and copy its **project number**.
2. Open **APIs & Services → Library**, find **Google Chat API**, and enable it.
3. Open **IAM & Admin → Service Accounts → Create service account**.
4. Open the account, choose **Keys → Add key → Create new key → JSON**, and download the file.
5. You will paste that file and the project number into Famulor before the Chat app can call the webhook.

## Connect it in Famulor

Your plan includes this channel. Open **Settings → Channels**, choose the card, name the connection, pick an assistant and save. The shared conversation settings — response delay (default 5 seconds) and inactivity timeout (default 30 minutes) — are described on the [messaging channels](https://docs.famulor.io/channels/messaging.md) page.

On the **Google Chat** card paste **Service account JSON** and **GCP project number (required for JWT verification)**.

## Point the provider at Famulor

1. Copy the Famulor webhook URL from the connection menu.
2. Open the [Google Chat API configuration](https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/api/chat.googleapis.com/hangouts-chat).
3. Set the HTTP endpoint URL to that Famulor address.
4. Set the authentication audience to the same project number you pasted in Famulor.
5. Turn on 1:1 messages and joining spaces. While you test, limit visibility to your own domain.
6. Save. A direct message or an @mention appears in History.

## History

Open [History](https://docs.famulor.io/monitoring/history.md) and filter by **Google Chat**. The thread, the assistant reply and any analysis appear there. You can pause the assistant and answer manually.

## API, MCP and command line

Create this connection in the dashboard. The public API and the command line cannot pass every value this card asks for, so they cannot finish this setup. The card needs the service account JSON and the project number, and a public create call does not accept those values.
