# Inbound vs. outbound caller

> Difference between inbound and outbound assistants — and where to set this in Famulor.

In **assistant settings**, you choose whether an assistant **receives phone calls** or **places calls**. In short: **inbound** answers, **outbound** dials.

## Inbound caller

An **inbound caller** is the phone assistant that **handles incoming calls** — it answers when customers or leads call you.

**Examples:** reception, front desk, support lines, general availability.

## Outbound caller

An **outbound caller** is the assistant that **places outgoing calls** — it dials contacts you configure.

**Examples:** cold outreach, appointment follow-ups, callback campaigns.

<Tip>
  You set **call direction** (inbound vs. outbound) in the assistant settings; see [General settings](/en/ai-assistants/general-settings) for numbers, routing, and details. For large-scale outbound dialing, use [Campaigns](/en/platform/campaigns).
